Oscar Livechat — no longer live, but still packed with chat.
Laura King and I hosted an Oscar livechat. Here’s the transcript. (Spoiler alert: There’s a lot of talk about dresses.)

Hi Rainbow!
Three fashion trends of note:
Lots of narrow dresses with high necks & short sleeves.
Either very pale colors or tomato-red.
Lots of texture in the fabric, from mirrors to nubby lace.
My fave so far: The pale violet gown worn by Mila Kulis.
Worst: Cate Blanchett; lots of weird pleating & an ugly circle shape on the bodice.
Melissa Leo: The weird high collar looks like Elvis at his Vegas worst.
Just started watching. Mila looks gorgeous. Her super-low neckline manages to look pretty, not sleazy. How does she do that?
Ai yi yi, Jesse Eisenberg’s hair looks bizarre. Like he was late to class.
Amy Adams is cracking me up. She’s trying so hard to keep her left hand on her hip.
Jennifer Lawrence: That red-orange tank dress is a bit too “Baywatch” for me.
1. You’re right, Jan, Melissa Leo looks wild.
2. And Russell Brand, who came with his mom, kind of looks like Weird Al. What is up with the hair tonight?
3. I think I’m the only woman in America who isn’t crazy about Justin Timberlake. I could be stuck on an island with Brad Pitt and Justin Timberlake, and I’d be like, “Does anybody have cards?”
Mila’s dress is a wonder of dressmaking construction.
Jan, I think I’m going to start the livechat — but I might have to take a 15-minute break. I’m waiting for a call from a Tim Halperin superfan. (Tim is Omaha’s American Idol.)

Ugh, Reese. Not liking the white/black on her. Nicole Kidman, also ugh.
I think Tim is going to go far.

Look, I wrote a book …
Coming in April from Dutton.
"Cracking, laugh-out-loud dialogue, characters that feel painfully real, and a sweet premise about love in the information age."
